Don’t see quotes like this too often — even from catchers.
“I want to play catcher and retire as a catcher, but it’s not easy with the Bears because the team requires me to contribute as a hitter.”
Apparently for some one DH just isn’t enough. Perhaps, according to the logic of Hong Sung-heon of the Doosan Bears, there should be two designated hitters in Korean baseball, because, frankly, hitting is not part of his game. He’s quite up front about that.
“I asked my manager Kim Kyung-moon for a trade on Saturday. The boss understood my proposal and I know he is looking for a negotiating partner.”
Hong had a career-worst record of five home runs to go along with 39 RBIs and a batting average of .268. Perhaps the statistic that’s most detrimental to Hong’s plight; an injury-shortened 80-game 2007 where he was used mostly as a pinch or designated hitter.
To counteract the negative press he’s received, Hong has returned to his alma matter Kyunghee University (in Seoul) in an effort to return, or, once again be accepted, into his natural position as backstop for the Doosan Bears — or whomever trades for him.
It said the director of management and public relations will meet with him soon to try and persuade him to stay with the Bears.
I would seem Hong’s pride has been hurt somewhere along the line. Maybe Daniel Rios should give him a call. A verbal pat on the back. Look for him to be back with the Bears next season.

That’s funny.. “the teams requires me to contribute as a hitter”.. as if that is unreasonable.

I think a lot of catchers believe in this idea. They just don’t say it

Tim Laudner had that sewn into his warmup jacket I think.
