IBAF World Cup Diary: Day 1, Rain

November 6th, 2007 Shinsano · No Comments

Team USA, along with 25-time winners Cuba, and Venezuela (all good friends on the geopolitical stage) are the favorites for this year’s IBAF World Cup (aka Cuba’s Cup), which will kick off Wednesday due to rainouts on Tuesday.

Baseball America has an in-depth position-by-position preview of the U.S. team, which is much stronger than in recent years and could conceivably challenge the perenial champions Cuba. The Cubans have won the past nine cups dating back to 1984.

Third-base is especially loaded with Dodgers top prospect Andy LaRoche, and Rays top prospect (and husband of Spurs point guard Tony Parker) Evan Longoria. Longoria’s quick rise to the majors will likely force Iwamura Akinori to move to second, short, or the bench for 2008.
