Well, This Worked Out Quite Well and I Didn’t Even Have to Do Anything

I’ve heard of Super Junior for a while but had avoided listening to their music until recently. Super Junior is a Korean pop group, is comprised of about 15 dudes. They  seem to be in some kind of  sub-teen market, if that makes sense. I can’t imagine someone over the age of 16 enjoying them at all. They promote school uniform brands and the music doesn’t appear to be secondary to the image, but rather third or fourth behind the image, dancing, and mugging.

Anyway, I happened to get stuck in a room with one of their songs recently and quickly felt a burning anger  that made me want to kick something. Keep in mind, I like a lot of silly Korean pop music…and for some reason  have decided  it’s ok to start admitting here on EWC.

This is a live performance of a song called “Happy Pajama Party.” Right. Now before you punch your computer screen read the title of this post again. There’s a very happy ending here.

For now, feel the anger rise and take a deep breath just before 1:14 when it really gets out of hand.

Still there? Ok, good. There’s a payoff. You’ll be happy — even pajama party happy — to know two of the guys from the group recently disfigured themselves for life by getting two of the most absurd tattoos imaginable. I pulled these off Popseoul today…

Tee hee…I’m hiding something…

Bluuuugggghaaaaa!

Kooooool! Looks like something that 6th grade kid who played D&D for 20 hours a day drew on his folder before he started biting the heads of chickens. I mean, WTF?

Here’s a closer look:

sj3.jpg

The bottom says: “A friend in need is a friend in deed.” Oh yeah! Rad! I mean, is this guy the victim of some Thai  tattoo artist’s  come down off heroin or what? I think this is what happens when you’re “the chubby guy” in a boy pop group of 15 or 20  that sings songs about pajama parties. Get an electronic ankle bracelet on this guy now before it’s too late.

But I can do you one better…

Drum roll…

That’s right….

“Actions are more prection than words.”

Brilliant.

Now we know they’re on heroin. Hmm. Suddenly Super Junior is much more interesting. Happy Heroin Pajama Party. Ok, I get it.

I have to be honest, seeing these photos gives me great satisfaction.  And it saves me the time and energy of actively disliking them. I couldn’t have  wished  anything worse upon them. No  one got hurt. No one is crying.

Next time  I accidentally take a detour through one of those  twinkly Artbox shops where everything smells like Barbie perfume and all the notebooks are covered in teddy bears blowing bubbles in the shapes of hearts, and a Super Junior song is foisted upon me I can think of these tattoos….and smile.

    Speechless.

That was misleading, I thought there would be something happy during the video, such as a band member having a seizure on stage or something and everyone else continuing the performance.

They ripped off ABBA there, I think. The melody of “Waterloo.” I never thought I’d live long enough to find a band worse than ABBA.

I dig the back acne, though. Is Bill Laimbeer in Super Junior? How about Bret Boone?

I’m wondering where one even gets the idea for a tattoo like that second one. Don’t they have dictionaries in Korea?
I can deal with the first a little…I have a few tatts myself and can appreciate the detail, and I like the crypic saying.

I can deal with Superjunior’s ridiculous prancing simply because they’re aiming for a very young crowd - even a lot of the third grade kids in my middle school think they’re childish. Dong Bang Shin Gi has to be the worst of the big boy bands here - just drivel and they honestly look like girls. Recently Big Bang has also joined the fraternity and I prefer them out of the three - they still retain some (but not much) degree of masculinity and the songs at least are catchy.

Wow. I never imagined myself ever posting anything like that. Or this: long live the Wonder Girls.

There’s so much wrong with this post..where do I start? Well..Super Junior is 13 not 15 first of all. And the song is not Happy Pajama Party, it’s Pajama Party by Super Junior Happy. I can understand your dislike, but get your facts straight.

And the tattoos aren’t that bad. Shindong’s is awesome, and Kangin’s is just like Americans getting kanji tattooed on them without knowing what it says. Koreans wont know the difference anyways.

So what if they’re childish? It’s fun :D
    Super Junior Fighting!

Big Bang is the least objectionable of the boy bands. They also made a song/video with Korean punk icons, No Brain. You could see the No Brain guys thinking, “It’s cool. Just 15 more minutes. Think about the paycheck. Think about the paycheck.” It’s not that awful of a song, if it gets my students playing No Brain instead of Big Bang, I’ll be happy.

Those tattoos….are dreadful. Prection? What word did he really want?

I thought it was 14 guys in Super Junior. Does it matter?

I can dig some Big Bang too. Let’s start a fan club. I also kind of like 2 p.m., the other current non wondergirls JYP group. Dong Bang Shin Gi is pretty terrible from what I heard over the weekend.
I think there’s currently 13 in SJ, but I wanted to emphasize there are too many to count. Although maybe Super Junior Naked Happy Pajama Party has more.

What a TERRIBLE article! Super Junior make a lot of people happy and they are good models for young people. Why does that have to be ruined by people like you? If you don’t like it don’t listen!
    Shameful! All of you!

LOL! It does get weird at 1:14, but that’s kind of the whole point. Super Junior has different subgroups, this one is Super Jr. Happy, and it’s style of music is goofy toddler music. The coolest subgroup is Super Jr. M (Mandarin), check out some of their songs like “The Moment” and “In Your Arms”. The best regular Suju, non-subgroup song is “Don’t Don”.

I feel bad for these guys though, it’s not their idea to do this crap. SM Entertainment manages them.. I mean enslaves them to do these things.

As I understand it, Superjunior started off with 12 members. Then at some point, their management decided, ‘What we really need is a fat guy,’ and so the fat guy was added… the rationale behind that move, I don’t really know, except perhaps to make the others look more appealing.

Now of course there are all the Suju (I can’t believe I used that abbreviation) spin-offs, the most bizarre of which is probably the Superjunior Trot spinoff (Trot = Korean equivalent of Enka).

Is it just me, or is their far too much collective knowledge about Korean boy bands on what is basically a baseball-themed blog?

I think you should be president of our fan club Baekgom.
I didn’t know about the trot version though. I’d like to hear that.

Let me restate that…I’d be curious to hear that.
