Well, Look Who’s Back in the Big Leagues

July 19th, 2008 Shinsano · No Comments

Jason Johnson, who hasn’t pitched in a big league game since Sept. 27, 2006, got the call from the L.A. Dodgers and threw three innings in tonight’s game at Arizona. The move was part of a best-of-EWC three way that sent Park Chan-ho back to the bullpen, Takashi Saito to the DL (possibly for the year) and Johnson into the Dodgers starting rotation.

Johnson, who is from Santa Barbara, was 11-5 with a 3.82 ERA for the PCL Las Vegas 51s. Apparently Johnson, who was named to the PCL All-star team, had a July 31 escape clause in his contract if he was not promoted to the Major Leagues.

Coming in relief for an ineffective Hiroki Kuroda, Johnson entered the game in the third inning, surrendering a triple to Chris Young who then scored on a groundout by Alex Romero. It would be the only run he would give up. His final line: 3 IP, 3 H, 1 ER. He didn’t figure into the decision.

Johnson pitches with an insulin pump and is described by MLB.com as “a true role model to countless diabetics and a tireless charity worker.” Still, that did not stop EWC from blindsiding him (albeit somewhat deservedly) in a piece written in our infancy. As the song goes: I was so much older then, I’m younger than that now.

Congrats to Jason and good luck.
