Everything goes wrong for Wang: Game One of the AL Division Series went disastrously wrong for the New York Yankees and staff ace Wang Chien-Ming, as the Cleveland offense pounded Wang for 8 runs in 4 2/3 innings Thursday Night at Jacobs Field. Wang turned in arguably the poorest performance of his career, struggling with his command (4 walks), and leaving hittable pitches over the plate all night. Wang, who went 10-4 with a 2.75 ERA at Yankee Stadium and 9-3 with a 4.91 ERA on the road, allowed two of the Indians’ four homers. Said Wang: “Everything was down the middle high.”
“Everything went south after a while,” Posada said. “His arm was dragging. He was up in the zone. His location was not where he’s at his best”.
Almost as surprising as Wang coming completely unglued in Game one was Joe Torre’s perplexing decision to pitch rookie Ross Ohlendorf–who entered the game with only 6 1/3 innings of Major League pitching experience–with the score 7-3 and the game still well within reach for the Bombers. Upon entering, an inexperienced Ohlendorf allowed Kenny Lofton to steal second uncontested, walked the first batter he faced, Franklin Gutierrez, and then gave up a double to Casey Blake that blew the game open 9-3. The Tribe tagged him for two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Torre, who is frequently criticized for mishandling his bullpen, could face a lot of scrutiny for going with Ohlendorf rather than Phil Hughes or Luis Vizcaino in a four-run game.
- (ed. note: if and Yankees fans, readers, or bloggers want to weigh in on this decision, please do because neither my friend Brooks, a Yankee fan that I watched the game with, nor I could figure this move out. I have always been irritated by Yankees’ fans quickness to criticize Torre and can’t stand the annual NY media calls for his firing every time the Yankees struggle for more than a week, but in this case his call for Ohlendorf seems inexplicable when he had (at least slightly) more experienced pitchers to call on).
- Dude, what the hell are you thinking? Possibly the most grotesque event of the night, however, was not on the field but off it, as Cleveland hero LeBron James gave Cleveland fans a good kick in the pants by wearing a Yankees hat. What might have been going through James’ mind when he decided to wear that no one will ever know perhaps, but James as well have worn a “Screw Cleveland” T-shirt to the game.
