Formula One Coming to Korea

September 23rd, 2009 Shinsano · 4 Comments

You might think I’m doing a post on Formula One coming to Korea because I know something about it. Wrong. I once watched Formula One in a Camden apartment I was house-sitting at in London. That was about eight years ago and I haven’t seen or heard of it since.

But the fact that it’s coming to Korea seems a little noteworthy and interesting. Seems like something Korean guys would dig. I’m sure they’ll be some racing model girls on hand if they aren’t busy playing pool.

It’s happening in Yeongam, which is in South Jeolla province, where Mayor Brian lives. On the surface one wouldn’t think Formula One would appeal to collectivist thinking, but like they say…you have to break a few Formula One cars to make an omelet. Or something like that.

Thanks for the link. I’m actually running for Secretariat for Kimchi Globalization in November, so I’ve been busy campaigning.

I don’t really get racing, and while I’m not out to offend those who do, I think it’s a bit irresponsible in a time of limited natural resources to enjoy a spectator sport where dozens of cars drive in circles hundreds of times. Yeah, I know other sports use up lots of resources as well, but it’s not as blatant.

The little reading I did do, based on the half-assed googling I was up to, says that people think this is just another cookie-cutter track by a designer known for them, and that it’s to get LG more involved in F1, whatever that means.

I guess it’s in Yeongam because this and a bunch of other projects are out there to try and distribute the wealth more evenly, since Jeollanam-do was long considered the poorest area. That’s not really the case anymore, and in a country smaller than the size of Pennsylvania, I guess you gotta stick the F1 track somewhere.

There actually is a Secretariat for Kimchi Globalization, by the way.

what’s the motorsport culture in korea like? (touring cars, rallies, open wheel, etc.?) Japan has had the GP for a while, and it’ll be good to have Korea have its own as well. Tho, the race calendar’s already quite crowded.

I think Korea used to have a Grand Prix event, but then stopped. Or maybe I’m confusing that with the Amazing Race.

    Hopefully someone else knows….

I’m always amused by the fact that Korea is in love with racing girls, but not racing. To be honest, I think they have their priorities spot on.
