South Korean Presidential Elections

December 10th, 2007 Shinsano · No Comments

I had some designs on covering the upcoming election here, thinking I might have something interesting to add that readers might enjoy seeing. But the truth is, I don’t and I’m even less interested than I thought I would be. Furthermore this particular election isn’t all that engaging — unless something totally unforeseen happens.

Basically, the elections effect my life as such: every morning there is a truck outside my apartment, blaring either a stump speech or a heinous campaign song, sometimes accompanied by people dancing and singing. Today I walked by a truck parked by a freeway entrance displaying a giant video screen with a woman sobbing and begging people to vote for candidate No. 1, Chung Dong-young. It was really over the top.

My wife is interested, mostly because she despises the candidate who is currently polling at 40% and will most certainly win — Lee Myung-bak, who she calls “rat face,” which if you look at him…

But Andy Jackson, a frequent contributor to the godfather of all Korean blogs, Marmot’s Hole, has a piece in today’s Korea Times that is exactly what I’ve been waiting for — a rundown of the prominent candidates. So I don’t have to.

Here’s Jackson’s scathing take on Lee Myung-bak:

a former business executive and mayor of Seoul, is certainly the most scandal-plagued candidate in the field. Since he started preparing for his presidential last year Lee has been hit with scandals involving free use of tennis courts, having fake addresses to get his children into the right schools, real estate speculation, using proxies to hide his wealth, fake jobs for his children and investment fraud.

But Jackson hits it on the head when he sums up Lee’s continuing popularity, despite the various scandals surrounding him.

After nearly five years being governed by a president seen as being moral but incompetent, voters are willing to support someone who they believe can get results, even if he has a little dirt on his hands.

This is the campaign video for canidate No. 4 Rhee In-jae, who Jackson calls the most hated man in Korean politics today due to his changing of parties. He’s polling at about 2% and has the same chance of being elected as I do. But, his campaign video is the most effective I’ve come across.
