One of the first things I realized about my wife when we met was that her sleeping habits were much better than any other woman I’d been around. My wife can sleep virtually anywhere, anytime, and for virtually whatever length of time she chooses. She can sleep through loud noises, and if she’s stirred she doesn’t get angry (like I do).
I’m envious of this and I consider it to be a kind of gift. I’m no insomniac, but I’ve had my share of bad nights. I rarely sleep straight through the night and I’m a light sleeper. I can’t decide if I think this is genetic or learned behavior. It’s probably both. I was a young insomniac and for me there was nothing worse than getting a bad night’s sleep before school on Monday. Hence, I often slept badly on Sunday nights. My parents are also what I would describe as bad at sleeping.
My wife’s family on the other hand are all All-star sleepers. I’ve seen my wife’s father sleep soundly on the floor with one leg on top of the couch, hands over head, lights on, and the TV blaring. Some guys have all the luck. I’ve gotten better at sleeping whilst in Korea. I can sleep on buses in Busan (not easy, the drivers are insane), and if I’m tired enough my mouth falls open.
Here’s a very funny Web site I just came across called Sleeping Chinese, which has about 600 photos of Chinese people sleeping. Some of these are funny, others terrifying and some that are kind of cute. Definitely give it a look before you hit the sack tonight.
