Sawamura Award: Race Tight for Japan’s Best Pitcher

October 13th, 2007 Shinsano · No Comments

With the dream matchup between  the Chiba Lotte Marines and the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters starting today  (series preview here)  one can expect there will be plenty of talk about the young phenoms that lead  the teams–Yu Darvish and Yoshihisa Naruse.

Both pitchers are in their early 20s and had amazing  statistical years.  A blog based in Japan has an interesting breakdown of what could be the first of  several  races for the Sawamura (Japan’s version of the Cy Young) between the two.

Both Darvish and Naruse finished  with eye-popping  ERAs of 1.82. Naruse’s record is better 16-1 vs. 15-5 for Darvish, but Yu’s strikeout total is much better (210-138).

With this in mind  the blog  takes a closer look at the two using FIP  (fielding independent ERA) and determines that Darvish should just win the award by a nose.
