Saber-scouting

Good looking new blog called Saber-scouting has been getting a lot of attention around town. That’s right, town. As in Blogtown. The co-founders both have experience working for major league teams and one is currently a scout for a team.

Yesterday they profiled Johnny Cueto, which, as a Reds fan interested me greatly. (Side note: anyone out there thing Cueto is more major league ready than Evan Longoria? Didn’t think so.)

At any rate Cueto is going to start the season as the Reds No. 3 guy and while I’m excited about the idea I don’t know if it’s a good move. He was absolutely rocked in his last spring training appearance and while he’s got some talent, I think he’ll be very up and down this season. That said, I haven’t scouted him either. Luckily Saber-scouting has done it for me.

Today’s profile is of Dennis Raben, a power-hitter from the University of Miami who they grade as a 70/70, which if you know scouting grades (if you don’t they’ve got a tutorial) is pretty amazing for a college-level hitter. That’s to say he’s a potential all-star.
