Royster Gears Up For Some Ass Whipping

January 11th, 2008 Shinsano · No Comments

I really think the Korean media should stop taking pictures of players and managers just as they walk off the airplane. Here’s Jerry Royster, new manager of the Lotte Giants, looking a little weary as he’s greeted by hordes of reporters at Inchon International Airport. Good they flew him to Inchon because if he’d flown directly to Busan he’d have gotten a pretty bad impression, as the luggage carosel set up in Busan is about as modern as TV dinners and The Brady Bunch. Not a fun way to spend the first hour after a 13 hour flight.

But Royster is here to manage a baseball team and he’s been out and about in the Korean media the past few days to the tune of about 150 Royster-related articles. He’s working hard. One of the more interesting comments he’s made is that he wouldn’t be surprised to see firstbasemen Lee Dae-ho, one of the brightest young stars in the KBO, in Major League Baseball before 2012.

Korea Beat has a translation of press conference Royster gave at Lotte Hotel in Seoul, during which he discussed several topics at length – mostly regarding his managing style, expectations of the Giants players, and experience as the first foreign manager of a Korean team.

Talk is cheap, but Royster sounds like he’s ready to kick some butt around the practice field, which is just what these little pips need.
