Wearing a sponsor’s logo on a uniform is common practice in Asian baseball leagues, however in Major League Baseball it is not allowed unless it’s that of the manufacturer of the clothing.

However, when the Red Sox take the field against the Athletics in their season opening series in Japan this March, for the first time in its 107-year history, the team whose hallowed name once spawned from the distinctively colored threads in its socks, will be wearing a uniform adjustment of a different kind of notariety – the corporate logo of a data storage company.

EMC, affectionately known as EMC-squared, is a Massachusetts-based company with ties in Japan. The Red Sox has employed EMC since 2005 and Fenway Park’s glassed-in .406 Club level was renovated and renamed the EMC Level prior to the 2006 season.

Great. How did they get permission to do it?

I think because it’s outside of the U.S. they’re allowed to do it.

Same deal with the ads that were on one or both teams’ helmets in previous Japan season openers, I’d reckon. (If I remember correctly.)

I just read the Yankees and Rays wore logos on their helmets (like Simon said), but this will be the first time the sponsoring company is American owned.
