One Year Later: Vietnamese Brides For Korean Brothers

March 30th, 2008 Shinsano · 12 Comments

I’ve been having a few computer problems so I can’t do this article justice with one of my snappy introductions/commentaries, but this is a subject I enjoy and that I’ve written about a couple times on here — Vietnamese women marrying Korean men.

This is an update on a story written last year by Norimitsu Onishi of the New York Times. Onishi travelled to Vietnam last year and wittnessed the marriages of Bui Thi Thuy and To Thi Vien to Korean husbands, Kim Wan-su and Kim Tae-goo.

As you’ll see in the story, their lives are filled with plenty of ups and downs.

In Kwangmyong, the couple lives with Mr. Kim’s mother and his older sister’s family — a total of nine people — on one floor of a three-story brick building on a narrow street. The older sister, Kim Ho-sook, had welcomed Ms. Vien and helped deflect the Kims’ 80-year-old mother, who was unhappy about the arrival of a foreign bride and said repeatedly that it would lead to the family’s downfall.

Happy times.

Hey, don’t hate on the Korean man. It’s hard on the shoulders having to beat your wife every night.
