For you Sox fans still reeling from your post WS hangover and looking to keep the buzz alive, here’s a YouTube clip re-visiting Matsuzaka Daisuke’s famed 200-plus pitch no-hitter at Koshien on August 22, 1988, when Matsuzaka became a Japanese baseball legend and Red Sox fans were still haunted by visions of Bob Stanley and Calvin Schiraldi.
My Japanese translation skills are notoriously poor, but I believe the interview with the then teenaged Matsuzaka goes something like this:
—
Announcer: Matsuzaka-san, You just threw a no-hitter at Koshien, how does it feel?
Matsuzaka: It’s the greatest feeling in the world.
Announcer: Were you nervous at all? You are now part of Japanese baseball mythology forever.
Matsuzaka: I just wanted to help my team win.
Announcer: So desu neh. Any other thoughts?
Matsuzaka: I hope one day I can realize my dream of pitching in Fenway in front of snotty Polo and Tommy Hillfiger wearing ex-fraternity presidents yammering on their i-phones during innings, and vacationing on the Vineyard.
Announcer: Subarashii desu neh. Thank you, Matsuzaka-san.
Matsuzaka: Thank you.
