Mariner Blogosphere Set to Burst Into Flames

January 28th, 2008 Shinsano · 5 Comments

I can’t think of a team with a higher ratio of well-written team blogs than the Seattle Mariners. USS Mariner is well-known as one of the best baseball blogs of any kind, and was recently mentioned by Peter Gammons as one of his regular reads. My personal favorite is Lookout Landing, written by Jeff Sullivan, who reads like a tear-my-hair-out Cubs fan who can write.  Prospect Insider is phenomenal, and MVN’s Cafinated Confines manages to hold its own as well. Plus, there’s an above average beat writer blog presence ie. guys that write for newspapers.

I don’t think any of them have been in favor of an Adam Jones + prospects trade to Baltimore for Erik Bedard. And some, particularly USS Mariner, are dead set against it, mostly due to a oft-professed belief that Adam Jones will be an all-star-and-beyond level player. Lookout Landing has publicly anguished over Bedard at length since the rumors started appearing in December.

But at any rate — here were are, and all things point to the deal going down. The current combination is Bedard going to Seattle, and Adam Jones, George Sherrill, Tony Butler, Kameron Mickolio, and Chris Tillman, going to Baltimore.

It’s a lot to give up, and if you check the afore-mentioned sites in the coming days you’ll read that again and again, but I think it’s fair to say it all leads back to Jones.

From Prospect Insider:

The Yankees have Joba Chamberlain. The Red Sox have Clay Buchholz. The LA Dodgers have Clayton Kershaw while the Cincinnati Reds have Jay Bruce.

And the Seattle Mariners have Adam Jones.

Very strong statement. As far as teams that aren’t the Reds go, I kind of like the Mariners. The Reds too had been in talks for Bedard, but Baltimore was starting the discussions with Jay Bruce, who is rated even higher than Jones. Of course, I’m biased. I’m also glad the Reds didn’t make that deal, even though I think Bedard is arguably the best pitcher in baseball.

Surprisingly, Lookout Landing seems to be already coping, but fear not, there will be plenty of blog tears and comments of woe in the coming days.

And as a Orioles fan I hope Bavasi will pull the switch on it. Based on the history of Bavasi, he jumps the gun a lot. Also, I hope Seattle adds Carlos Trunifel to the deal. I can’t say enough how I like to have Trunifel in any deal.

As for the deal it’s happening soon. Bedard came out publicly and said he’s felt he’s been mistreated by the Orioles and is good and gone.

Just waking up today, I hear Adam Jones is on route to Baltimore for a physical. It says the M’s are sending Jones, Sherrill/Clement, Tillman, and a fourth player who I hope is Trunifel.

Just waking up today, I hear Adam Jones is on route to Baltimore for a physical.

Well news is now he’s still in Venezuela, but was ordered to stop playing winter ball. He’s probably going to be en route to Baltimore soon. Also, Sherill said he hasn’t heard anything saying he’s in route to Baltimore for a physical either.

Angelos was tending to a family matter today, I still expect this trade to go down before the end of the week.

It’s known Bedard wants to test the market when he reaches free agency and I can’t see how the M’s can compete financially with the Yankees, Red Sox, and Cubs. If all they get is 2 years of Bedard, Bavasi had messed up once again.

Though let me say one thing as a Orioles fan, I hope Bavasi fires off on this trade and Angelos gives his OK.

I think it’s a good deal for the Orioles too, although I think Bedard would help the M’s quite a bit. USS Mariner says he’d improve them by a grand total of 2 wins, which makes me wonder if win share stats are complete BS.
It would actually flesh out their rotation nicely….a legit #1 instead of King Felix, who is still more of a 2. Puts Washburn where he belongs at 3 and Silva where he belongs at 4. Batista at 5. Much better.

There’s no doubt about Bedard improving the M’s quite a bit. Like you mentioned by moving Felix, Washburn, Silva, and Batista where they belong.

As for the Win Shares system, I can’t say much about the system since I really don’t understand the system one way or another to give a accurate statement about the system.

Though as has been mentioned before if Bedard leaves for nothing, this trade won’t look so smart by 2010 as Seattle will essentially only cash in on a draft pick in compensation.

I guess I doubt Seattle’s ability to sign Bedard and that Bedard isn’t likely to give the M’s a discount to sign long term now when he can make much more on the open market as the Red Sox, Yankees, Mets, and Cubs can all out-bid the M’s when he reaches the open market.

Here, Amy Jo asked incredulously, while disengaging around the stall!?!
