The Bobby Valentine-managed Chiba Lotte Marines defeated the Softbank Hawks 4-0 behind strong pitching behind Right-handed starter Yoshihisa Naruse to advance to the second stage of the Pacific League Climax Series held on Saturday. The Marines will face Nippon Ham Saturday in Sapporo.
Naruse, who was 16-1 with a 1.82 ERA in 2007, defeated former Kansas City Royal Jason Standridge, and Saburo Omura hit a three-run triple. A win over the Ham Fighters will give the Marines a shot at their first Japan League title since 2005.
Upon being interviewed about the loss, Standridge remarked that he felt bad about the loss but relieved to learn that he was in no immediate danger of being sent back to the Royals.
