Taking some info from a Korea Beat post, True Stories of Korean Baseball has an interesting breakdown of how much each team spent per win during 2007.
Samsung(6.2 billion) = 97.3 million per win
Hanhwa (4.6 billion) = 68.3 million per win
Kia (3.5 billion) = 69.75 million per win
Doosan (2.8 billion) = 40.58 million per win
SK (4.02 billion) = 53.2 million per win
Lotte (3.75 billion) = 66.4 million per win
LG (4.085 billion) = 66.97 million per win
Hyundai (4.1 billion) = 73.1 million per win
Wwhat does this tell us? A couple things. One thing is that Samsung outspends everyone by a fair margin. But I think most people who follow Korean baseball know that already. Doosan got a good return on its investment, spending the least per win. Not bad. SK, the best team in the KBO last year, was fifth in spending. That ranking will jump to No. 2 for 2008, which is to be expected since the Wyvrens won the league. But as far as I can tell, the gap has widened. SK is arguably better, while I would say Doosan and Hanwha are worse. I think Samsung is about the same, or possibly a touch better.
The other thing that jumps out at me is that the Lotte Giants, coming off a mediocre season, will see a decline in payroll. Until Our Heroes rolled into existence the Giants have been the biggest tightwads 5 or 10 years running. Unfortunately, despite the pomp and circumstance surrounding Jerry Royster’s hiring, it looks like the thriftyness will continue.
As Matt from TSOKB points out, the Woori Heroes are plumetting toward a payroll under three billion. He says that even if the team wins 50 games they’ll still be paying over 40 million won per win. Personally I don’t see them winning 50. I think they may struggle to win 40. Incidentally the worst team in KBO history was the Binggrae Eagles (now Hanwha), who in their inaugural season finished 31-76 (.290).
