Obviously I’m joking, but I’ll tell ya…it gets hard to think about things to write about a team that is dominating the league so thoroughly. The Wyverns were 21-3 during the month of June, and even though Doosan is off to a better start than last year and playing at a very respectable .577 clip — a winning percentage higher than three of the six MLB first place teams — the Bears are currently 10 games out. And we haven’t even hit the All-star break.
1. SK Wyverns (1) —Offensive player of the month for the SK juggernaut? Lee Jin-yeong went 30 for 66 and led the team in both runs scored (18) and RBI (20). The 10-year vet was limited to just 80 games last year and, remarkably, through the exact same number of ABs this year (248) he’s got the same number of hits, home runs and walks, and is within two on his RBI, BA, and OBP totals. That said it’d be tough not to give Kim Gwang-hyun the June MVP award. He went 4-0, allowing just four runs with a 18-5 K/BB ratio. I think it’s safe to say he’s the best pitcher in the league.
2. Doosan Bears (2) —Lost 2 of 3 to a reeling Samsung team and finishes June 13-9. Kim Dong-ju led the league in RBIs for the month with 24 and while LF Kim Hyun-soo has fallen back a little, his breakout season is still probably good for MVP of the team thus far. His line reads .346/.444/.496 and he’s second in the league in hits, doubles and triples.
3. Lotte Giants (3) —How’s this for consistency: 11-11 for the month of June and get this — either swept or were swept in six of the eight series during the month. Crazy. The Giants have also lost 5 of 6 in it’s Masan expeditions, and is now 50-77 in the city since starting games there in 1991. Sounds like it’s time to stop playing in Masan boys. Bit of an off month for Son Min-han, who after an incredible start was 0-1 for the with a 4.03 ERA for June.
4. Hanwha Eagles (4) —Still plugging away, and unless Kia catches fire or Samsung gets it together, should end up with the 3rd or 4th seed. Finished the month a solid 13-10. How about Brad Thomas, who after a rocky start has been pretty lights out? One run allowed in 11 2/3 innings, four saves and a win during June.
5. Kia Tigers (6) –Closed the month a little cold after starting hot, but the Tigers have shown that they’ll be knocking at the door of No. 4 during the second half. Cleanup hitter Jang Sung-ho, whose missed a lot of time this year, had a terrible 2 for 16 week after being one of the league’s hottest hitters through the start of the month. With Choi Hee-seop out with general craziness Kia kind of goes as Jang goes.
6. Samsung Lions (5) —As bad as things were in June (8-15) they still managed to take 2 of 3 away from Doosan over the weekend. You just can’t count them out. However, the starting pitching has been epically bad — Tom Shearn is getting belted at a .344 clip, and sports a 8.34 ERA to go with a 2.03 WHIP. He’s 0-5 to start his Korean career and could soon find himself out of the league. Wes Obermueller (6.88 in June) and Yun Sung-hwan (5.40 in June) have also been bad. This team was once first in the league in ERA and now it’s just one from the bottom.
7. Woori Heroes (8) —Have won 8 out of 11 and got its first career Korean save from Shingo Takatsu the other night. But the real story on the Heroes is Jun Jun-ho, a .292 hitter throughout his 18 year Korean league career, who is leading the league in hitting with a .354 batting average. Nice story. Ma Il-yeong also continues to enjoy a breakout year, he was 3-1 with a 2.06 ERA for the month.
8. LG Twins (7) –I didn’t see the Twins beat Samsung 20-1, but I still don’t believe it. Someone better come clean on that shit. Worst in the league in BA, OBP, OPS, ERA, WHIP and BB and Ks in both hitting and pitching. Have a fun summer boys.
