Kim Tae-gyun hit HR number 21 on the year and former Rays farmhand Cedric Bowers struck out 10 over 7 innings to lead the Hanhwa Eagles over division leading SK 3-1 to move within a 1/2 game of Samsung in the race for the No. 3 seed.
Bowers, who has his first name on the back of his Hanwha jersey, picked up his 11th win of the year and only walked 3 batters. He averages 6 walks per game.
In other action Doosan beat Hyundai 6-1 and LG beat Lotte 4-3 to hold on to a slight hope of squeezing into the final playoff spot.
Due to the number of rainouts in August and September, (not to mention the absence of any domed stadiums a unique situation has presented itself. The final three weeks of the regular season will entirely consist of makeup games.
South Korea being a small country (about the size of Indiana) means the remaining schedules read something like that old little league one on your fridge.
Take the example the final stretch for first place SK:
9/22 at Hanwha
9/23 Samsung
9/24 off
9/25 off
9/26 at LG
9/27 at LG
9/28 off
9/29 off
9/30 off
10/1 at Hyundai
10/2 Samsung
10/3 at Lotte
10/4 at Hyundai
End regular season
Despite the make up schedule it’s possible the KBO will have to further change things as a typhoon is expected to arrive in Korea sometime early next week. The league announced the playoffs will begin Oct. 9 and that if any more games are rained out they will be made up by playing doubleheaders.
The rainouts themselves are the subject of some debate. This article speculates the KBO calls games too quickly in hopes of getting higher attendance figures at a later date.
