Tsuyoshi Nishioka, Munenori Kawasaki, Takahiro Arai and Shinnosuke Abe knocked in runs during a six-run seventh inning rally that led Japan to a 10-2 victory over Chinese Taipei, giving the Japanese a clean sweep and an Olympic Birth at the conclusion of the Asian Championships.
Japan took the lead in the first inning via an RBI single by Arai. But after that the Taiwanese starter Yang Chien-fu settled down to hold Japan scoreless over the next five innings, keeping the score 1-0.
Taiwan rallied in the sixth with a two-out single by Peng Cheng-min and a two-run homer by cleanup hitter Chen Chin-feng, who took Yu Darvish deep over the right-center wall to take a 2-1 lead.
But Taiwanese lead was a short one as the Japanese offense came together in the seventh inning, picking and plucking away. Shuichi Murata reached first on a hit by pitch, Atsunori Inaba followed with a single, and a Tomoya Satozaki sacrifice bunt loaded the bases with none out.
Another bunt by Saburo Omura tied the game and then Nishioka broke the tie with a single to right. Kawasaki followed with a single to make it 4-2. Norichika Aoki took a walk to load the bases again, which was followed by RBI singles by Arai and Abe to pad the lead.
Japan added three runs in the ninth including a two-run shot by Arai.
Japan’s starting pitcher Yu Darvish wasn’t spectacular, but was very solid through seven innings of three-hit ball. He allowed just two runs in picking up the win.
In the other game the Korean team shellacked the Philippines, who were winless in the tournament. Taiwan and Korea can both still qualify for the Olympics and are eligible to play in the final qualifying tournament next March. Those games will feature teams from around the globe and send three teams to the Olympics.
