EWC Presents Great Moments in Baseball Card History: The Billy Ripken Scandal

If you were a card collecting geek like I was growing up in the 80’s, you doubtlessly remember the priceless ‘F-ck Face’ Billy Ripken card that scandalized the collecting community to its foundations. Parents were shocked. Kids giggled. Some vendors indignantly refused to sell the card. Who would think ballplayers used profanity? The card’s value quickly shot up to over $30 in value before people tired of the gag, and its value fell to almost common status. (Ed. note: The card currently sells from between $9.00 - 15.00 on Ebay.)

I have one of these somewhere. I would have thought it’d be worth more.

i was curious to see what everyone thinks of the baseball card industry. i know about 15 years back the baseball card industry was a big thing. i have quite an assortment of cards including a handful of mickey mantle, nolan ryan and other cards. i have no idea how much they are worth now but they have to be much less than what they were before. my friend bought a lebron rookie card last year. he paid about $2,200 USD. for one card. what do you guys think about that? just curious. i forgot……….i must have about 30 barry bonds rookie cards. :

I don’t know a lot about the current industry, but I see some current sites around that lead me to believe it’s still thriving on some level.
This one is pretty good http://completist.wordpress.com/
…his approach is more “current” than the crowd I usually ran into at baseball cards shops when I was younger. Which is to say, the card collectors I ran into as a kid, as the record collectors I ran into later in my life, who I assume are similar to people in comic book conventions, or ukelele collectors — ain’t so “current.”
