I’ve got no beef with the Mets. As far as teams I’m not a “fan” of go, I like them. But there’s something special about the Mets losing, especially losing in the way they have the past two seasons.
Part of what’s special is the fans, who, I guess because they’re from New York, aren’t shy about expressing themsevles. They cultivate a culture of losing, even though the team is usually competitive.
I’ve watched the Mets over the past few games, mostly because I was curious if they’d end up playing the Cubs. It’s been interesting hearing announcer Keith Hernandez, trying his best to assert that the season has been a success, regardless of if the team makes the playoffs or not.
I’d disagree. The Mets have enough to win the NL East, but they collapsed for the second straight year and will endure another long offseason.
In the eighth inning of today’s game a couple of guys were in the stands with their caps inside out, doing that arm tumble thing made famous during the 1986 World Series. “Old school,” said Hernandez.
What can you say? That’s one of the things that makes baseball great. These guys play so long, so hard, to the point of where almost everything becomes an insignificant blur. At that point, some teams get the flip of the coin and others don’t. The Mets didn’t, again.

Aaron,
As a Philadelphian, I love the fact that the Mets went down in flames to the Phillies in 2 straight seasons. I LOVE IT!

Everyone always says the last two years, but weren’t they supposed to play in the World Series in ‘06 before they got Molinaed?
