Edward Salcedo, the 16-year old Alex Mantlerodcabrera

I’d seen this briefly about a month ago and been a little wary, but there’s been a fair amount of chatter about Edward Salcedo, a 16-year-old from the Dominican Republic. He’s  represented by none other than Scott Boras.

I mention Boras up top because as you’ll see, we should probably take everything said about this kid with a grain of salt. But, as you’ll also see it’s hard to ignore the kind of comparisons being used to describe Salcedo’s talent.

It’s rumored he’s been signed by the Indians. It’s also rumored he’s the second coming of Alex Rodriquez at the plate, but can field like Omar Vizquel. Another rumor is that Boras has been pouring bushels of superlatives in the soup to drive up the asking price. Now, according to Baseball America (via MLBTR) there are some other red flags flapping in the breeze.

But there still has been no official announcement of him reaching a deal with a major league organization. Adding to the intrigue is Major League Baseball’s recent firing of three investigators in the Dominican, including one who was working on Salcedo’s case.

All MLB says at this point is that it is still investigating the case of Salcedo to establish the validity of his documents and confirm that he is 16 years old. At least four international scouts, speaking anonymously, told Baseball America they believe Salcedo is older than 16.

A Dominican lying about his age? Say what? I can only imagine the behind-story on this situation. MVN’s Tribe Report has also been following the situation closely. And for good reason. They might be signing the kid.

In case you missed it, the Reds made a recent splash in the international talent pool, signing a kid everyone incorrectly thought was ineligible because of his age. Looks like the Reds made a savvy move.

I did see a small mention of this. These kind of signings seem so dicey to me. Not so much because of the likelyhood of them developing, but just the age and the fact that it’s in the Dominican. That said, I hope it works out.
