The EWC would like to welcome New Yawk City guest writer Juice as he blogs the 2007 World Series. When not holding it down on NYC basketball courts, rubbing elbows with Wall St. Journal writers, NYC governor Elliot Spitzer, or other Gawker-worthy luminaries in the Big Apple, our DC-born Brooklyn denizen blogs about and cheers for the Boston Red Sox live and direct from Ft. Greene. (We won’t hold the fact that he started rooting for the Sox in, um, September of 2004, er, way back in the day, against him, especially because– as you can see– he’s got quite a mean streak and we don’t want to get on The Juice’s bad side…)
It’s 8:26, I’m trying to focus on both the game and my fantasy basketball draft. My head is spinning. There’s a 65% chance I draft Bill Walton, Pete Maravich and the ghost of Dennis Rodman.
Schilling looks good in HD. Good = Fat.
Fat = giving up a SB and not getting his fat ass over to 3B to cover, so Taveras advances from 1st to 3rd, and scores on a Helton grounder. 1-0 Rockies going into the bottom of the first.
Sox go down 1-2-3 in the first.
Nothing exciting in the 2nd inning. JD Drew got hit with a pitch in the ankle that seemed to sting pretty bad, so that added some hope. But he’s okay. Oh well.
Schilling actually looks pretty good tonight. It’s a good thing he’s not pitching in Denver. I could see him listed on the injury report the day after his start. It’d read, “Schilling (winded)”
Okay, here we go. Ubaldo gets two out, then walks Pedroia and Yooooouk. Ortiz up with 2 out.
AND IT’S HIGH….IT’S DEEP…it’s fucking foul. By about 12 inches. Just missed the Pesky Pole. Johnny Pesky is dead to me right now.
Ortiz strikes out. The ghost of Johnny Pesky is a crotchety old ghost indeed.
Schilling goes 1-2-3 again in the 4th.
Lowell walks, Drew hits a single, knocking Lowell to 3rd, Drew advances to 2nd on the throw with 1 out. C’mon ‘Tek!!!!
Sac fly! Sox tie it up, Drew to 3rd. 1-1 game.
And bitch-ass Lugo grounds out weakly to 1st, stranding Drew and Ellsbury on 2nd and 3rd. Dick.
[NOTE: I've been told that Johnny Pesky isn't dead. I regret the error.]
Schilling goes 1-2-3 again (I think…I was drafting at the time) but whatever…he gets through the inning.
Nothing happening for the Sox in the 5th. This kid is really good…huge fastball, big hooking curve. The Sox just can’t draw a bead on him at all.
And Ortiz walks, Manny walks, and Lowell doubles to the left field corner. Giant Papi scores, Sox go ahead 2-1.
Another walk, a pitching change for the Rockies, and the Sox have the bases loaded, two out, Varitek up to bat.
Smell the excitement! It actually smells like stale beer, Fenway franks and the rotting corpse of Grady Little’s career, currently buried under the mound.
And Varitek flies out to LF. 2-1 Sox after the 5th.
So the Sox have stranded 7 runners so far in the game. Ubaldo was pretty untouchable but started losing control. I think the Sox only had 4-5 hits off him, but 4 walks. Some more timely hitting and this is a 4 or 5 run game for the Sox right now.
Schilling gets 1 out in the 6th, then puts two guys on. He waddles to the bench to a rousing standing ovation from the Fenway Faithful. Okajima comes in and induces a ground out, followed by a 3 pitch strikeout.
Konichiwa, bitches!!!!
Youkilis sweats enough to put out the California wildfires. He keeps having to step out of the box to wipe his brow. Growing some hair would help, but I prefer to think of him wearing a Manny-style du-rag.
Giant Papi up with men on 1st and 3rd. And he flies out to deeeeep center. Looked good for a minute, but then nothing.
2-1 Sox, end of the 6th. I can’t tell if this is “exciting” or “boring.”
Okajima dominates the Rockies again. His line tonight, 1.2 IP, 0 hits, 2 K’s. Konichiwa, indeed.
Wow, BoyzIIMen are singing God Bless America! There’s really nothing else to say about that.
Sox go down 1-2-single-3. Matt Herges is looking like a more doughy, less Hispanic Ubaldo right now.
Okajima coming back out, which is surprising. I’m nervous about this given it’s the top of the lineup. But Papelbon is getting loose so as soon as someone gets on base, chances are Papelbon comes in.
Oooh, another strikeout! That’s number 3 for him. Willy Taveras looks dumb. Fuck you right in the ear, Willy!
For some reason, Joe Buck insists on calling Kaz Matsui by his full name, Kazuo. I think this is the first time he’s been called “Kazuo” since his parents, Bob and Shirley Matsui, yelled at him for staying out late in the 7th grade.
[EWC Editors' note: Buck's calling Matsui by his full name can be attributed to one or two things: Many Japanese fans would be offended by the shortened form of Matsui's name and see it as a form of disrespect, and/or Buck is in his usual semi-catatonic joyless state as an announcer and simply can't be bothered to read beyond the names on the lineup card]
Okajima strikes out Kaz(uo) on a heater up on the zone. He’s the best. I know you well enough after all these years to feel comfortable telling you that I’m a little aroused by this performance.
Here comes Papelbon!
Oof, he gets ahead 0-2 but then Holliday nearly kills both Papelbon and Pedroia with a grounder that was absolutely smoked back through the box.
Heh, “box.”
Wow! Holliday gets picked off with Helton, the go ahead run, at the plate. Holliday got caught about 12 feet off the bag. That was straight embarrassing. Remember the scene in “Major League” when Willie Mays Hays slides into 2nd trying for the steal, and ends up about a foot short, and the 2nd baseman gives him that, “come on, come on” motion and Hays disgustedly lies there and gets tagged? That’s kind of what just happened.
Ellsbury grounds out. Lugo bunts into himself in fair territory and is out.
I don’t advocate spousal abuse, but it’s times like this when I wish Lugo would beat his wife again just to get arrested, suspended and the fuck away from the Red Sox for the rest of the Series.
Pedroia gets on with a walk, and Yoooouk grounds out or something. To the 9th we go!!!
I’m not really nervous at this point, but my dog clearly is.
Okay, Papelbon vs. Helton to lead off the 9th.
And Helton strikes out. 1 down.
And Atkins flies out to Ellsbury in CF. 2 down.
And Hawpe strikes out. GAME!!!!
2-1, Sox take a 2-0 lead in the Series to Colorado. Bottom line, they were lucky to get this game. The Sox pitching was great, and the Rockies’ pitching was superb as well. All the debate about whether the Rockies were affected by the 8 day layoff might be warranted. They just look really slow trying to get after the fastballs being pounded at them.
