Note: for those of you bizarre and/or well-adjusted enough not be interested in fantasy baseball, this article isn’t for you. Instead, we reccommend this.
As day breaks, your humble EWC hosts Aaron and Jackson are knotted up 5-5 in a dramatic conclusion to a semi-final match in a 6×6 12-team head-to-head salary cap keeper league–The Inscrutable Kingman. Sunday’s results will determine the winner.
The league is highly competitive and filled with with a host of experts, including Yahoo Fantasy Roto Arcade writer Andy Behrens, ESPN Page 2’s Eric Neel, fellow ESPN fantasy expert Christopher Harris, Deadspin wunderkind Will Leitch, and the one-and-only Eric “Aaron Cheats” Wittmershaus.
Last year Jackson, after several salary cap violations and stern admonishments from an irate Behrens, took his dark horse Mighty F’ers to the championship after sneaking into the playoffs-much to the chagrin of the fantasy heavy hitters in the league. This week, after a first round playoff bye, he looked to be well on his way en route to trouncing Aaron’s lowly 6th seed For’ver Crunk, jumping out to a 9-1 advantage early on.
However, fortunes have evolved, and thanks to a torrid week by Adam Dunn and four fortunate wins from his bullpen, Crunk has pulled even with Jackson’s F’ers, who are led by Big Papi, Hanley, and scrappy neophyte Jacoby Ellsbury.
The score currently rests at 5-5. Here are the particulars:
Team Hitting R HR RBI SB OBP SLG
The Mighty F’ers 33 12 38 5 .376 .546
For’ver Crunk 37 12 38 3 .406 .568
Team Pitching W SV BB K HLD ERA
F’ers 5 0 13 53 1 2.98
For’ver Crunk 5 5 21 42 3 4.98
As you can see this is anyone’s match.
Here are the rest of the lineups (Sunday’s starting pitchers in bold):
F’ers: C Brian McCann, 1B David Ortiz, 2B Robinson Cano, 3B Mike Lowell, SS Hanley Ramirez, MI Jeff Keppinger, LF Carlos Lee, CF Jacoby Ellibury, RF Nick Markakis, Util Raul Ibanez, SP Justin Verlander, SP John Smoltz, SP Scott Kazmir, SP Brian BannisterRP Rafael Betancourt, RP Joe Boroski, RP Rafael Perez, RP Casey Janssen, P Scott Baker, P Tim Wakefield
For’ver Crunk: C Victor Martinez, 1B Albert Pujols, 2B Dustin Pedroia, 3B Miguel Cabrera, SS Derek Jeter, MI Macier Izturis, LF Adam Dunn, CF Jeremy Hermida, RF Matt Stairs, Util Garrett Anderson, SP Aaron Harang, SP A.J. Burnett, SP Esteban Loaiza, SP Daniel Cabrera, RP Francisco Rodriguez, RP J.J. Putz, RP Derrick Turnbow, RP Bob Howry, P Brett Myers, P Joel Zumaya
Update: F’ers take a 6-5 lead on a day devoid of much hitting by either team. Looks like it’s coming down to Crunk’s Pedroia/Jeter combo vs. the fearsome quartet of Ortiz/Lowell/Cano/Ellsbury with the F’ers holding to a 13-12 advantage in HRs and a 41-40 RBI lead. Neither team has any pitchers going.
Update 2: It got a little exciting with Jeter’s 3-run-shot late in the game, but with HRs by Lowell and Cano the F’ers advance 7-4. They’ll try to become back-to-back champs. Way to go F’er.
