With a lineup more loaded than Jon Wayne’s colon the Yomiuri Giants dropped game 1 at home to Giant-killer Tyrone Woods and the Chunichi Dragons by a 5-2 count.
Chunichi skipper Hiromitsu Ochiai pulled a surprise prior to the game announcing that lefty Takashi Ogasawara would be the starter rather than ace Daisuke Yamai, a right-hander.
The move seemed to knock the Giants off balance, quieting Yomiuri’s potent lineup until Yoshitomo Tani hit a solo shot in the 5th. But by then Chunichi had built a 5-0 lead thanks to a couple walks and a ball between the legs of Michihiro Ogasawara. Chunichi followed with a single up the middle by Motonobu Tanishige for a 2-0 lead.
Woods followed with a two run shot over the right field fence in the 4th off Giants ace Tetsuya Utsumi, who was then removed from the game. Woods, whose 35 HRs left him one shy of the Central League crown, had 29 hits, 25 RBIs and seven home runs vs. the Giants in 2007.
But the story of the series will continue to be the effectiveness, or lack thereof, of the Giants minted lineup, which out-homered Chunichi’s by a 191-121 count in 2007. For game 1 the big bats of Yoshinobu Takahashi (35 HRs in 2007), Shinnosuke Abe (33), Michihiro Ogasawara (31) and Lee Seung Yeop (30) produced zero runs and zero RBIs.
Game 2 will be Friday night in Tokyo.
