It wouldn’t have taken a Buddhist astrologer to predict that sometime in early October (this was prior to the weeks upon weeks of rainouts) Doosan and SK would do battle be decide the champion of the Korean Baseball Organization.
Indeed the games needed to be played, but that formality came to an end Tuesday evening in Daejeon, where the Bears finished laying waste to the Hanwha Eagles 6-0 to earn the right to head west to Inchon where the mighty SK Wyverns will have been waiting for nearly three weeks.
Doosan’s No. 3 starter Kim Myung-jae, much like the No. 2 starter, much like the No. 1 starter, had a fairly easy time with the powerful Eagle lineup, going 6 2/3 strong innings, while yielding just three hits en route to the victory.
But the real story of the game was Hanwha’s pitching, specifically the early exit of its ace Ryu Hyeon-jin, who after giving up three runs in the first inning, departed with an arm problem in the top of the 2nd. Cedric Bowers replaced Ryu, going six innings and theoretically keeping Hanwha in the game, but logistically it wasn’t even close.
As they were all series the Hanwha bats were again quiet Wednesday evening. The series totals for Jacob Cruz (1-for-12), Kim Tae-gun (3-for-11), and Lee Beum-ho (2-for-12), who combined for a grand total of 1RBI between them, tell the story of a team outscored 23-5 in the series.
For Doosan the offense again revolved around series MVP Lee Jeong-ok who scored on a passed ball in the first. For the series Lee finished 6-for-11, scored seven times to go with 3RBI, 4 steals and a home run.
The Korean Series will begin 10/22 in Inchon.
