Designer of Cub Ad Defends Use of Rising Sun Image

This is a comment from Chicago Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti about the controversy kicked up by the new Fukudome ad. Basically Mariotti both condems the both the ad and the Cubs, but then at the end tells everyone to relax.

However I did find this amusing:

For perspective, remember that World War II ended in September of 1945. A month later, the Cubs played in their most recent World Series.

I can’t agree. The rising sun might not be offensive to most Americans, but then again, we won the war, and few of us are aware of the extent of Japan’s wartime atrocities and history of colonization — activies carried under the rising sun and which make the image still anathema throughout much of the rest of Asia. It is about as acceptable to me as the swastika and the hammer and sickle.
