On Monday evening Yu Darvish became the first Nippon Ham Fighter to win the prestigious Sawamura award for the league’s best pitcher.
The 21-year-old Darvish won 15 games on the year, posting a 1.82 ERA and leading the league with 210 strikeouts.

Winners are picked normally from starting pitchers according to basic standards of 15 wins, a 2.50 ERA, 10 complete games, 200 innings pitched, 150 strikeouts, 25 game appearances and a winning percentage of .600.
Darvish surpassed all seven standards, becoming the first pitcher to do so since 1993.
