Terrific photo capturing the winning run of the Blue Dragon — Korea’s oldest high school tournament. Daegu beat Kyungnam (Busan) with a double to the gap in the bottom of the ninth inning. The final score was 2-1.
I saw both teams several times while scouting the Blue Dragon. I might have predicted Kyungnam would win it’s third title in a row, but the Daegu team has several very good (and very big) hitters.
That said, through eight innings Kyungnam’s starter Park Min-gyu had held Daegu to just one hit. But a single, an advance on a passed ball, and a double to the gap won the game for Daegu.

Last year I turned on the TV to catch the end of a replay of a Korean HS game between a school from Seoul and one from Gwangju. It was the bottom of the 9th and Seoul were clinging on to a one-run lead, when the pitcher started to lose it, and I mean really lose it. You could actually see his tears as he struggled to keep it together, and Gwangju pounced on him, smashing him for the game-winning runs. It was one of the most compelling things I’ve ever seen. Was that from this competition?

That might have been the Golden Lion, which I believe was won by one of the Gwangju teams last year.
I was watching a game on Sunday that…ironically Gwangju vs. Kyungnam…where the pitcher from Gwangju kind of melted down and turned a close 2-2 game into an 8-2 loss. No crying though. Just couldn’t get the ball over the plate.
