I do apologize to our readers for not yet following up on the epic saga of trying to get English language rosters from the CPBL administrators as promised. I will resume our tragi-comic mission this week. I know I shouldn’t bother the English-language liasion with petty requests like asking him to do his job when he’s got important things to do like trying to keep a lid on newly percolating gambling scandals, hiding empty seats, taking 3 hour lunch breaks and chatting on MSN maintaining a high quality league, but gosh darnit I just can’t help myself. Anyways, to the rankings:
Tong-Yi Uni-President 7-11 Lions (27-11-0): First baseman Kao Kuo-Ching’s .361 average and 40 RBI’s and Tilson Brito’s slugging (.310, 8 HR, 32 RBI) continue to keep our corporately sponsored hero’s on top of the CPBL. Pitcher Lin Yueh-Ping improved to 5-0 with a 2.59 E.R.A. to supplement Pan Hui-Lun (3-0, 1.50) and Lou Pote’s (7-0, 3.61) already dominant 1-2 punch.
La New Bears (20-16-2): Chen Chin-Feng’s hot bat (.373, 27 RBI, 5 HR) and supporting cast–including wai-guo ren OF Gary Burnham (.306, 25 RBI), CF Huang Luong-Yi (.345, 35 Runs, 25 RBI), and irascible SS Lin Chi-Shen (.348, 25 RBI) are keeping the Bears in contention. Pitcher Mike Johnson’s record remains a perfect 7-0 and Hsu Wen-Shoung’s 4-2 record and 2.92 E.R.A. lead the pitching staff. Pitchers Andrew Lorraine (3-4, 3.14) and Li Feng-Hua (2-2 3.34) are also pitching well.
Brother Elephants (16-18-2): Pride of Tuku Chen Guang-Ren (.354, 32 RBI) and Chen Ji-Yuan (.329, 7 HR, 29 RBI, 35 runs) lead the Elephants’ offense. Will someone who knows Chen Ji-Yuan please let him know his chances of getting signed to an MLB team will increase signficantly if he stops using a pink bat? Pitchers Liao Yu-Chen (5-1, 2.51) and Kobayashi Ryokan (4-2, 2.59) lead the pitching staff.
D-Media T Rex (16-21-1): First Baseman Wang Chuan-Jia (353 clip, 26 RBI, 20 Runs ) and fellow firstbaseman Gao Wei (.343 20 RBI) are the bright spots in the otherwise toothless T-Rex offense. Starters Lai Jin-Nan (5-2, 4.92) and Corey Bailey (4-0, 1.15) keep the rotation going, with Bailey sporting and impressive 24 K’s to 5 walks over the season.
Sinon Bulls: 16-22-1: Dominican starter Jose Espinal is 2-1 with a 1.76 E.R.A., and averaging more than a K per inning in 30.2 innings pitched, and Yu-Wen Bing is 5-1 with a 3.26 E.R.A. Catcher Zheng Da-Hong leads a not-very-bullish offense with a .312 average and 23 RBI. Inquiring minds want to know just what the h-e-double hockey sticks is going on with Yang Chien-Fu, who has turned into a human pinata this season.
Chinatrust Whales: 16-23-0: The Whales are caught in a gill-net they can’t escape at the moment. Starter Liu Yu-Zan gets a cursory nod simply because we have to talk about someone. He’s 3-1 with a 2.29 E.R.A. Colombian first baseman Carlos Villalobos (.301, 24 Runs, 21 RBI) gets an equally cursory head nod. Inquiring minds want to know just what in the h-e-double hockey sticks is wrong with Ni Fu-Te, who is giving up nearly 2 hits per inning this season.

Some of the teams have the rosters posted on their websites. I know for a fact the Brother Elephants have them in English. I’d suggest wikipedia, but people throw stones whenever I mention Wiki. I have stopped mentioning Wiki.

Hey Matt
thanks for the heads up. Wikipedia actually has the English rosters. In last weeks power rankings, I wrote that I actually translated the names myself with my wife, only to discover that wiki had them later. At this point, trying to get this info from the CPBL–which is a basic piece of info that all the other pro leagues have no problem coming up with–has just become a source of fun for me and our readers.
thanks for the heads up tho.

I tried posting this yesterday, but it didn’t seem to go through. 2008 CPBL Rosters
I may still have some 2006 and/or 2007 remnants in there that need to be cleaned out. Also, players who haven’t played with the top team yet this season (and were traded after last season) may be on the wrong team.
Still, this should be a fairly good start.

Strange Westbay-san. Not sure why that didn’t go through. This one above went into the “to be moderated” comments. I had to approve it. Maybe Wordpress doesn’t like taiwanese baseball.

there is a reason why cpbl is in shambles… the folks that are running the league there make dmv workers look like hard workers.

oh man tell me about it. unreal. usually in order to be arrogant about what you do you have to be good at it. Certain CPBL workers exhibit this priceless combination of arrogance and utter incompetence.

So some independent gaijin in Japan who doesn’t even understand Chinese is better able to put together what you want than the league itself? Think that might get their attention regarding their incompetence?
Oh, and I need to add å¨ç´æ–¯ = Wilton Veras (formerly 卿‹‰æ–¯ when he was with Macoto a few years ago) to the list.
How did I figure all of that out? Hmmm.

Any of you guys know about the foreigner rules on the rosters. seems the La New team has me on the minor league roster for 50% of the season. Whats up with this. Is this normal or should I ask questions as to what is going on. Do teams typically feel comfortable paying a foreigner salary to be sitting on their minor league roster ? Have you heard of teams just saying see ya.. dont need you anymore….kind of dont know what to expect…first time here.? thanks.

Sounds a little weird to me Gary, but I have no idea how those contracts work. It could be a tax dodge of some kind.
Foreign players in Korea get dropped all the time. I’m guessing it’s the same in Taiwan, but I don’t know for sure. In Japan I think foreigners are more likely to be demoted to the minors since their roster rules are more flexible.
