The Chunichi Dragons advanced to the Japan Series after completing a 3-0 sweep of the Tokyo Giants Saturday night, defeating the Giants 4-2 in the Tokyo Dome. The Dragons once again benefitted from strong pitching, as relief pitchers Nakata Kenichi and Hitoki Iwase locked down the game by preventing the Giants from driving in runners on 1st and 2nd in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings.
Iwase pitched the 8th and 9th to earn a two-inning save. Catcher Tanishige Motonobu’s booming home run to left field in the 7th gave the Dragons a two-inning cushion and the Dragons never looked back. The game was marred by a rather strange incident as two gai-koku-jin players, Korean national Seung Yeop Lee and Chunichi 1B Tyrone Woods sparred, inducing a bench-clearing altercation. Woods had the last laugh however, as Lee struck out in a pivotal at bat later on in the game.
