Chinese Taipei bounce back–but not enough

Looking to vindicate themselves after yesterday’s disgraceful meltdown against China, Chinese Taipei lost to Cuba 1-0 and fell to 1-3 overall.   Chinese Taipei is now all but eliminated from medal contention in this year’s olympics.

Quick-armed righty Lee Chen-Chang, the least heralded of Taiwan’s three amateur pitchers (the other two Cheng Kai-Wen and Lo Chia-Jen),   kept a tough Cuban lineup in check until his lone mistake–a no-doubt blast to right field surrendered to outfielder Frederich Cepeda–gave Cuba the only run it needed.

Cuba advanced to 4-0 in Olympic play, making it the tourney’s only unbeaten team.   Starter Elier Sanchez held a punchless Chinese Taipei lineup to three hits over seven innings and are looking like the team to beat in this year’s tourney.

Hopefully, Taiwan’s embarrassing performance in the Olympics will put pressure on Chien-Ming Wang to play for his country in the World Baseball Classic. He won’t be running any bases there…
