Boosted by five perfect innings by Kenshin Kawakami the Chunichi Dragons had an easy go of it in Game 1 beating the Hanshin Tigers 7-0 in Nagoya.
The playoff game was the first in franchise history for Chunichi who can clinch the series and a round two date with the Yomuri Giants with a win on Sunday.
Kawakami won 17 games in 2006, but had a slight dropoff this year. But he was magnificent in Game 1, going seven innings, striking out nine, walking none, and giving up just two hits. He didn’t allow a single Tiger to reach second base.
Offensively the Dragons were paced by Masahiko Morino who hit a 3-run homer and ended with 4 RBI on the day. Tyrone Woods also hit a 2-run shot in the first inning.
For today’s game Chunichi will send Kenichi Nakata (14-8), who is 8-2 against Hanshin lifetime, to the mound in an attempt to clinch the series.
