From a blog I’ve been recently enjoying called Extra! Korea. A hilarious lost in translation moment on one of Korea’s more annoying TV shows 우리 결혼했어요 (we got married). The concept of the show is that different celebrities pair up and pretend they’re married for weeks on end. Sound like fun? Yeah, me too.
On this [...]

Starbury Arrives in China, Salary TBD

We haven’t had many basketball related posts here on EWC. There was my ill-fated attempt at following Jianlian Yi’s progress in the NBA, and then there was the time that Jackson decided to not only publically admit he was a T-wolves fan, but went so far to spend some energy venting about Kevin McHale. Although, [...]

The Boston Herald’s Michael Silverman brings news that Boston’s Matsuzaka Daisuke finds himself in hot water after publicly criticizing his throwing rehab program. He reportedly vented his frustration with not being able to throw as much as he wants, and claimed Japanese pitchers require different conditioning programs due to “ethnic, racial and physiological differences”.
Manager Terry [...]

EWC Goes to Trial: KBO Star Arrested for “Seduction”
December 4th, 2008 · 3 Comments
Yes, welcome to Korea where you can not only get sent to jail for a year-and-a-half for adultery (if you’re a woman), but apprently for seduction as well.
Guilty as charged. Ahem. The story only identifies the player as “Mr. A,” but he was arrested in Inchon and is a “star” player. Apparently police waited to make the [...]

The Pitcher With Two Contracts
February 1st, 2008 · No Comments
Very odd situation in NPB in which pitcher Jeremy Powell apparently had a loose agreement to play with the Orix Buffaloes, and was faxed a two-page document in Japanese, which he apparently signed, not knowing that Orix had intended it to be a contract.
In the meantime he received another offer from another team, the Fukuoka [...]

An Asian Tilghman? Korean Anchor Causes Uproar by Laughing after Reporting Tragedy in Inchon
January 10th, 2008 · 11 Comments
Just one day after Kelly Tilghman made her now infamous “lynch him in the back alley” comment about Tiger Woods a female news announcer in Korea made a gaffe that, while not very similar in context or meaning, should still be viewed next to Tilghman’s remark. Unlike Tilghman, the Korean announcer (who works for MBC, [...]

I enjoyed this piece by Chicago Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti the other day and wanted to give it a special write up. First off, I’m not a Cub or White Sox fan, but I like Chicago as a city and I love how the rivalry comes to a head in the two major newspapers. I [...]

Automatic Translation Devices — Then and Now
December 5th, 2007 · 1 Comment
Anyone who has studied a language at length has contemplated alternative methods to language acquisition. A Chinese pill you pop in your mouth in order to speak perfect Mandarin, a English serum for the next speaking interview, or, perhaps most realistically, a little box you talk into that produces perfectly translated language out the other [...]
