I recently submitted an entry into a fun project called the Rogue’s Baseball Index, the brainchild of the blog Pitchers and Poets, of whom longtime EWC friend and occasional illustrator Ted is a part of.

In short the Index, in the words of the creators, is “a growing dictionary of the baseball terms that they didn’t teach you in Little League, and that you won’t hear about in the director’s commentary to Angels in the Outfield.”

Some of the entries are hilarious, with names like The Constanza, The McCarverism, and this funny one…Hold On, It’s a Bunt!:

The Cine-Bunt is trick play most often seen at the climax of baseball movies. A big power hitter will come to the plate, at a time when a home run would win or tie the game. The hitter puts on a show of being ready to launch one into the ether, even going so far as to call his own shot by pointing into the outfield. Then, just as the ball is hurtling in towards home plate, the power hitter defies all expectation and drops down a perfect bunt, befuddling the opposition, the crowd, and the movie viewer.
Notable Cine-Bunts (**SPOILER ALERT**):
Tom Berenger as Jake Taylor’s Cine-Bunt at the end of Major League

My contributions are 3 New Terms From Asian Baseball found in the Baseball Abroad category and include The Nervous Lee, The Taiwan Sizzle, and Pocket Crayon Washing Machine — from Korea, Taiwan and Japan respectively.

Looks like our lovely cheerleader after the jump just may have had a sumptuous Roasted Red Pepper Sausage Penne or two too many during her baseball career. And the photo after that shows us that Friday’s is great not just for Tigers, but for Lions as well. Samsung Lions, that is. (NOT safe for work).

Five essentials for your next Korean Baseball game. Why do they all begin with B? Baseball. We’re fun that way.

1. Beer (Soju, Makgeolli, Bek Se Ju, Wine, Whiskey):

There are no container (or food) prohibition laws in Korean baseball stadiums. Cans, bottles, alcohol stills…it’s all nice and legal.

Granted, the alcohol inside the stadium is not Americanballpark-esque $8 mincrobrew price. A can of beer will set you back $2, but there’s no reason to stop at a store on your way in.

For $10 you and your friends can drink 5 pitchers of Hite and alienate yourselves by singing corrected English versions of ballpark songs Koreans have appropriated for their own language and ballpark experience.

2. Baby (as in child)

When a foul ball or home run is hit into the stands Korean fans start cheering “아주라,” which means: “give it to a kid.”

If you bring a young child to the park you will be guaranteed to receive any ball hit within two sections of your seat. If you keep on the move there is a possibility of multiple balls during the afternoon.

3. Binoculars

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apNR1qBjl1Q

4. Books (novels)

Korean baseball managers call to the pen early and often (5.1 times per game) Games often stretch into 4 hour territory. Be prepared.

5. Bo-bo

Means “kiss” in Korean. One of the great traditions of Korean baseball. The camera seeks out unsuspecting couples around the park, projecting their images on the stadium jumbotron, and waiting until they kiss (or don’t).

Public affection in Korea is still a relatively new concept so the results are often hilarious and heartwarming.
