Boris with Michio Kurihara

This came out earlier in the year but it just finally made its way to my ears.  Boris  has always been a little heavy for my tastes (although “Rainbow” has me hmmm-ing), but Japanese psyche masters Ghost have always been a pet band for me. I’ve seen them  several times over  the years, usually opening for other bands, and a couple times  at the Terrastock festival in 1998.

The pairing of Boris and Michio Kurihara, one of the constant members of Ghost,  really takes the sludge  out of Boris’s sound, taming the three-piece to the point of where “Rainbow,” in many ways,  sounds like a more fuzzed-out version of Ghost.

“Rainbow” is a smooth criminal. In  a real shocker, Boris guitarist Wata to contributes some silky vocals to the title  track, which is also my favorite.

The album was reissued by Drag City earlier this year.

Aaron, that is pretty great. And here I was, fuming over how the IBAF site is dysfunctional while the developers fix several problems…and I can’t post any new info, and the day’s games are about to begin (aaaarrrrrghhhh!!)…and I click to hear Rainbow and am blown away.

I really liked it even before the guitar solo, which actually reminds me of my own approach to playing guitar! Nice to know I’m not totally crazy. Or that there are others who are just as crazy out there.

Wildly cool. Have to see if I can find that here in NYC. Thanks.
