You might remember the fun post Bonus Babies from a month or so ago, detailing some of the more exceptional clauses found in major league baseball contracts. The Biz of Baseball has a similar, equally amusing piece. Here are some of the highlights:
RHP Roy Oswalt was awarded, in his previous contract, a clause where he allowed the franchise owner, Drayton McLane, to give him a bulldozer for winning Game 6 of the 2005 National League Championship Series (NLCS).
Just about what you’d expect from a Texas-based baseball owner, I suppose.
RHP Jason Schmidt is reserved premium tickets for home games.
I wonder what happened in this situation since Schmidt missed nearly the entire 2007 season with an injury. Does he still hand these tickets out for friends and family? Does he feel any guilt in doing so? Does he use the tickets himself?
RHP Paul Byrd is provided with a suite for road games.
Wha?
This is my favorite.
OF Ichiro Suzuki has $25M of his $90M contract value deferred at 5.5% interest, reducing the deal’s average annual value to $16.1M. That money is to be paid in annual installments January 30th beginning the year after his retirement.
Yes, some very shrewd business acumen on display here by Ichiro. Deferring 28% of his salary for his retirement. Something tells me not many other guys do this.
