Beijing Kicks off Anti-beggar (blogger?) campaign

January 4th, 2008 Shinsano · No Comments

Beijing police took to the streets yesterday as part of a campaign to  clear the  streets of beggars to create a “civilised and sound” environment for the August Olympic Games, state media reported Thursday.

Officers will patrol the city 24 hours a day, looking not just for beggars, but also peddlers, pamphlet distributors and tricycle taxi drivers who ply their trades without licences, the Beijing Morning Post reported.

“They’ll have nowhere to hide,” the paper said after the launch of the campaign at a ceremony Wednesday in front of the city’s military museum.

Since bloggers are sometimes viewed as cyber-pamphlet distributors one has to wonder if they’ll be part of the cleanup, ahtough the Chinese government already restricts blogging pretty severely. Just today the government announced websites need to get government permits in order to provide video programming or allow users to upload video.
