I think I’m going to be deferring to Matt for the KBO coverage this year (check out his series preview here), but Lotte’s game 1 win is certainly worth a mention here considering Royster’s finest were swept out of the post-season last year. This gives the Giants home field, which is a big advantage for them.
CJ Nitkowski got the starting nod and pitched very well through three innings before leaving with a strained shoulder. No word yet on how bad the injury was. The key play in my mind is illustrated in the above at top. With the score tied 1-1 in the 5th and a man on third, Lim Tae-hoon uncorked a pitch in the dirt that went through catcher Yong Deok-han’s legs after he tried to backhand it. Things got worse for Doosan from there and the Bears lost 7-2.
Joh Jung-hoon went a strong 7 2/3 innings, striking out seven and giving up five hits.

I dare say if Lotte take tonight’s game, the series is theirs. A friend of mine told me that no team in the KBO had ever won a series after losing the first game; I assume that’s referring to the best-of-five series. Doosan have the quality to bounce back but that was a huge win for Lotte last night.

The real fail was Lotte. Way to back up a good win with three stinky performances.
