He was doing alright. 276/364/469 in his final season in (admittedly hitter happy) PCL. Those aren’t bad numbers for a catcher, and yes, he was able to get on base and have some power. Apparently his defense was only average at best, and his bat didn’t quite warrant a starting job, so he just fell short of being a major leaguer. Many first rounders have fared much worse.

I think there was a little mystery surrounding his reasons for retiring. People assume ballplayers want nothing more than to play baseball professionally and only quit if they can’t do it anymore…but it’s entirely possible he just got sick of it or felt he’d rather open a business or do a 9 to 5.
I remember JT Snow saying once that if one of his kids wanted to be a pro ballplayer he’d try to convince them change their mind. He was totally serious too.
