At long last Baek Cha-seung returned from a near two month trip to the DL with shoulder inflammation. He made a Thursday start versus the Indians B-squad and looked fantastic only yielding a run in 6 innings of work. The 4-1 win was his first since May 31.
The blog Mariners blog Lookout Landing has a report along with a Win Expectancy chart for the game. If you’ve ever been curious about Win Shares/Win Expectancy/Win Value Lookout Landing posts them for every Mariner game.
According to the chart Baek increased the Mariners chance of winning by 21%. This was tops on the team for that game. In contrast, Adrian Beltre was 1 for 4 with 2 LOB. His win share was -4.6%.
We’ll see where Baek ends up for the Mariners next year. It seems logical that he’ll compete for a spot as the No. 5 starter–assuming his shoulder is sound.
Here’s his final line for the year:
W-L ERA IP K BB WHIP
4-3 5.15 73.1 49 14 1.38
