Asian Halloween and Live Blogging Thereof

October 31st, 2007 Shinsano · 74 Comments

Halloween where I live is pretty non-existent except in nightclubs and apartment complexes where rich families who spend  75% of their income on English lessons live. I’m guessing China is much the same. They’re more into it in Japan, although given this from the NYT, I’m not sure if I’d be diving into the candy tonight.

Inventor Spot has a listing of the Top 5 Japanese horror films of all time. Personally, I don’t like horror films, despite the fact that Korea, as influenced by Japan, has a reputable horror flick scene.

But a few years ago in Brooklyn I did see No. 3 on this list, Audition by Takeshi Mike who was just mentioned here a few posts earlier. Surely anyone whose seen Audition hasn’t forgotten it. One of the most shocking films I’ve ever seen.

Of course Japundit has got you sorted with a post featuring the best films by Takeshi Mike, a list of the best Korean horror films of all time, and another list of the scariest Asian movies of all time.

One of the films mentioned on the Korean horror list is Tale of Two Sisters, a hit in Korea and, to a lesser extent, abroad, and an update of a Korean folk tale. Frankly, my horror film watching stopped when I removed the VHS Friday the 13th covers I’d stolen from a local video store and tacked on my wall.

tale.jpg

But in the name of the blog and specifically the more real-than-real world of live blogging, I downloaded the film, will watch it alone tonight in my 17th storey apartment overlooking Busan, and blog my reactions in the comments section of this post. 8 p.m.

Surely most of you have nothing better to do than to follow the thoughts of a non-horror fan, who, to be fair, is kind of a pussy, while he watches a scary movie. Come one come all.

And to end, just to get in the spirit of things, here’s a story about a missing leg that turned up in downtown Tokyo.

    That’s a cool movie. You might cry….

  • 2 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 7:41 pm

Not if these nachos I’m making can help it.

  • 3 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 7:49 pm

Just added live blogging to the categories list.

  • 4 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 7:50 pm

    Dragons 2 Fighters 1 Top 5

  • 5 YourfriendJeff // Oct 31, 2007 at 7:52 pm

You’re really going to do this eh?

  • 6 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 7:55 pm

Sure. Lots of sites do it.

  • 7 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 7:56 pm

Actually, I got the idea more from the japanesebaseball.com chat thing they do. Reporting games.

  • 8 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 7:59 pm

    Couple minutes till show time

  • 9 YourfriendJeff // Oct 31, 2007 at 7:59 pm

I think you might be doing a lot of talking to no one. But I guess that’s not uncommon for you.

  • 10 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:01 pm

You’re just jealous you aren’t hosting your own live blog. Have you seen this movie?

  • 11 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:02 pm

Ok, here we go. Opening credits.

  • 12 YourfriendJeff // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:04 pm

No…I’ve never heard of it. Did it come out here?

  • 13 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:05 pm

Yeah, it came out when I was home once. There was a fairly big promotion for it.

  • 14 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:06 pm

Wow, so I’m watching this on a Gomplayer…a Korean movie player and it has little ads going across the bottom of the player….for none other than the Korean Racing Model Billiards thing.

  • 15 YourfriendJeff // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:07 pm

I have to get ready for work…I’ll check back later.

  • 16 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:08 pm

Ok Jeff…so far it’s a doctor interviewing one of the sisters

  • 17 Grimes // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:10 pm

It’s a good movie. I saw it at a theater in Seoul

  • 18 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:13 pm

I’ve wanted to see it for a while. So far so good. Or, well filmed anyway..

  • 19 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:13 pm

Where do you live in Seoul?

  • 20 Grimes // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:16 pm

I live in Gangnam. I teach here. I like your site. I kind of followed the coverage of the Korean playoffs. So what about Halloween down there? There’s all kinds of stuff going on up here. I’m going to a club around here.

  • 21 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:18 pm

Yeah, I kind of assumed that. I took a little walk around my neighborhood…Seomyeon, moreorless the city center, and there’s no trace of trick or treat, even at the clubs. Just a different deal down here.

  • 22 YourfriendJeff // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:19 pm

Didn’t we go to a place in Someyon when I was there?

  • 23 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:20 pm

    yeah…wow, 3-2 Dragons…this is a good game.

  • 24 Grimes // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:21 pm

I went down there once…I saw a baseball game at Sajik actually. I like Busan…a little slower than here. Cheaper definately.

  • 25 YourfriendJeff // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:23 pm

Are you watching a game, a movie and doing a live blog??

  • 26 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:24 pm

Busan is cheaper. I prefer it to Seoul, but I’ve only been up there 4 or 5 times. It’s not like I lived there. That said, I dig Seoul too. More to do in terms of bars and…well, everything.

  • 27 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:25 pm

Jeff I don’t see this as live blogging. More like a get together with friends. Like a book club. A bookclub where we watch a baseball game.

  • 28 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:26 pm

    With nachos

  • 29 Grimes // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:28 pm

I got offered a job down there over the summer but I went home instead. My girlfriend is from there. So if we stay together I’m sure I’ll end up visiting there at some point.

  • 30 Grimes // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:30 pm

In fact, I should go get ready…she’s be here in a few minutes.

  • 31 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:30 pm

    You guys wearing costumes?

  • 32 Grimes // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:32 pm

    I mean she’ll be here.
I’m not, she’s wearing a rabbit thing with her friends. I don’t know what it is. The club is doing a girls get in for free if they dress up deal.

  • 33 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:32 pm

Ah, sounds like a Korean kind of club. Girls drinking for free too?

  • 34 Grimes // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:34 pm

I don’t know. I hope so. I think its a western style club. Called Smooth, I believe.

  • 35 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:35 pm

Well, have fun. Thanks for popping in.

  • 36 Grimes // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:36 pm

Yeah, thanks. Before I take off can you give me one more score update? I’m kind of a recent Dragons fan.

  • 37 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:37 pm

Still Dragons 3-2 bottom of the 6th.

  • 38 YourfriendJeff // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:40 pm

How’s the movie? I’m about to leave. Thought I’d check in before I get on the good old turnpike…

  • 39 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:41 pm

Kind of scary. One of the girls just had a dream where somthing crawls on the floor next to the bed, then rises above the bed and begins to bleed…I’m assuming…from between the legs.

  • 40 Grimes // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:41 pm

    Later man.

  • 41 YourfriendJeff // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:42 pm

Well, if you get really scared you can call my cell phone

  • 42 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:45 pm

can I call you at work? what’s your work number?

  • 43 YourfriendJeff // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:46 pm

sure, just have me paged on the intercom. Just tell the secretary that you’re in Korea, doing a live blog about watching a scary movie and that you’re really scared. She’ll put you right through.

  • 44 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:47 pm

Ok, check. Have a good day at the office.

  • 45 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:53 pm

I think I’ll go into the game chat on japanesebaseball and tell everyone to come here for the afterparty. Halloween post-game afterparty.

  • 46 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:58 pm

so this movie is about half over. I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t scary. It’s very slow and subtle. I’m sure it’s setting up for a horrific finish. When I say horrific I mean, frightening. This woman playing the mother is great.

  • 47 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 8:59 pm

    Nacho dish washed.

  • 48 jackson // Oct 31, 2007 at 9:04 pm

Hey, how come I wasn’t invited to the party?

And for the record, anyone who hasn’t seen Audition should go get it immediately.

  • 49 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 9:04 pm

Well, a guest just choked to death at the dinner table and vomited green. Then a girl had a vision of a deathly being hiding under a table.

  • 50 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 9:05 pm

The afterparty or the live blog party? I think the live blog party goes without saying.

  • 51 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 9:06 pm

The afterparty…I don’t know. Depends on who shows up. Might be too many peeps.

  • 52 Trickortreat // Oct 31, 2007 at 9:09 pm

Hi everyone. Looks like a party.

  • 53 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 9:11 pm

    You’ve got the spot.
By the way the game is still 3-2…Fighters just removed Seguignol for a pinch runner, but couldn’t score.

  • 54 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 9:12 pm

Uh oh. Dead bird in the bed.

  • 55 Trickortreat // Oct 31, 2007 at 9:14 pm

I saw that movie three or four years ago. Scared me pretty well. I liked your post. Asian horror films are much better than the American ones.

  • 56 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 9:17 pm

Well, like I said in the post I don’t watch too many horror movies. But it seemed like a fun thing to do. Plus my favorite download site was offering free dls of all horror movies.
That said, this is good. Very slow and building. Not the blood and guts I expected.

  • 57 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 9:19 pm

Dragons threatening in the bot 7th

  • 58 Trickortreat // Oct 31, 2007 at 9:19 pm

What are you guys going to write about now that all the seasons are ending?

  • 59 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 9:23 pm

Oh, there’s plenty. There’s the pre-olympic qualifiers next month and the world cup…plus all the Japanese players who are posting, then the winter meetings in December. Plus we’ll review different players seasons and talk about where they might end up etc. I never realized how much was going on until we started this site.

  • 60 Trickortreat // Oct 31, 2007 at 9:26 pm

If you’re going to do this live blogging stuff you might consider getting a chat program to do it in.

  • 61 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 9:28 pm

    I know.

  • 62 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 9:28 pm

This was pretty spur of the moment actually.

  • 63 Trickortreat // Oct 31, 2007 at 9:29 pm

It’s not a bad idea. I’ve seen this kind of thing on other sites. People like to congugate in these things. Or on comment boards in general……

  • 64 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 9:30 pm

Dragons got an insurance run. 4-2.

  • 65 Trickortreat // Oct 31, 2007 at 9:37 pm

Gotta go…just wanted to see what was happening. Next time give us more notice on the live blog deal!

  • 66 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 9:39 pm

I will. At least a few days. I wrote that post this afternoon not even intending to do a live blog chat room party. But it seemed to fit the mood of the piece. Anyway, thanks for dropping in.

  • 67 Trickortreat // Oct 31, 2007 at 9:40 pm

    K. Bye.

  • 68 YourfriendJeff // Oct 31, 2007 at 9:47 pm

Yo yo. How’s the party? You didn’t call me so the movie must be ok.

  • 69 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 9:49 pm

It’s almost over. Scary. How was the commute?

  • 70 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 9:50 pm

Dragons 4-2. Iwase is coming in.

  • 71 YourfriendJeff // Oct 31, 2007 at 9:52 pm

I read about that Iwase…didn’t you say he’ll come over here.
The commute was shit thank you very much. Getting worse too. I gotta take the metro I think. Expensive but less havoc.

  • 72 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 9:54 pm

He’s great. I hope he does go to MLB. He’s a free agent, so he can if he wants. If the Dragons win that might make the decision that much easier. Closers from Japan have done well in the US.

  • 73 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 9:56 pm

Looks like this party is over folks. The trademark Korean classical strings outro and stop motion shot is on. And there’s the credits. One out in the 9th. I’ll have a report up soon.

  • 74 A.S. // Oct 31, 2007 at 9:58 pm

    Dragons win 4-2.
