If you’re like me you’ve always had a keen interest in the pirates that scour the south seas, but other than the odd news report here and there, have never really learned much about them. Well, here’s a great summary piece by The Economist, detailing the trials and tribulations of dealing with the mostly Somalian pirates that terrorize ships in the Indian Ocean.
The Indian Ocean - The Most Dangerous Seas in the World
Once you’ve listened to that check out this article in The National, which is a very specific account of a man named Andrew Mwangura, who is the head of the Seafarers’ Assistance Programme, and is often called on by the pirates to negotiate ransom money. The article says most of the pirates work as contractors, are hired and funded by Somalians living abroad, and only each receive a couple hundred bucks out of the deal.
