Abreu Visits Taiwan, Gets Mauled by Mob of Fans in Taichung

Pardon the slowdown in posts but I’m currently in the midst of scouting this years 2008 Wood Bat Tourney in central and Southern Taiwan. Can’t discuss much about the actual game highlights, but one thing I can report on was a visit from Bob Abreu, who attended this year’s opening ceremony. After the ceremony, I watched as Abreu was literally mobbed by a group of about thirty rabid fans. He had a look of bemused panic on his face, and I could have sworn Dean Martin or Frank was in the house from the fan response probably reserved for DJ on most occasions outside of Formosa. It seemed as if he wasn’t really expecting the response that he got.

Abreu, apparently not concerned by being one-upped by Jay-Z’s 40/40 club in Manhattan, was in town to promote his less ambitiously named 30/30 line of sneakers. Hey, at least give the guy credit for being a self-aware ballplayer, although at this point 20/20 would probably be more realistic. Abreu also gets props for learning some Chinese characters–he wrote “good luck” in Chinese in the photo above.

Did you call him Bob before he came to Taiwan or did you guys strap on your 30/30s and paint the town red?

Heh. Bob Abreu is a big man. I am a little man. Didn’t get a chance to meet the guy, but it looked like he was having a good time. Sort of.
