A Frontrunner’s Guide to World Series Game 1 Using Win Expectancy Tables

October 25th, 2007 Shinsano · 7 Comments

My Korean friend Do Man-su doesn’t like baseball, so I thought it would be fun to watch a game with him and record his observations for a  post. Man-su is admittedly extremely competitive and  vowed to keep a rooting interest in the game.

Unfortunately Man-su is an engineer and works some 10-12 hours a day, so in order to save time  we’re going to use win expectancy tables, which  I reveal from left to right by  covering the  graph with a piece of paper, then slowly  showing the table to Man-su (via Fangraphs).

I recorded the results with my phone which I transcribe below.

Me: Ready?
Man-su: Yes.
Me: Who are you rooting for?
Man-su: Colorado. Absolutely.
Me: Why?
Man-su: I’ve been to Denver once.
Me: Ok, I’m starting now.
Man-su: Ok…let’s go Rockies. Uh-oh, it’s going up. Home Run for Pedroia. Wow. Still going up. Let’s go Boston! Up up up, J Drew double. Yes! Looking good. T….what is his name?
Me: Tulowitzki.
Man-su: Ok, lets go Colorado. Come on Denver. Whoops, back up. D Ortiz. Yes. Let’s go Ortiz. Let’s go Red Sox.  Hey. Hey. Good Red Sox. Mmmm. Up a little more. Good Boston! And J…double. Up and…line. Dead. Colorado is dead. And end. It’s over and Boston won! Let’s see…13-1. Woah!
(Claps hands)
Man-su: Good game.
Me: Who do you think will win game two?
Man-su: Boston. Definitely.

Yes, it is much like me but I make no bones about the fact that I will root for the Reds unflinchingly as soon as they commit to the team with the same kind of drive. If they sign A-Rod, as has been (slightly) rumored, I’ll be there all year. If they sign Bonds…then I won’t.
