Sadly, this will be the final edition of “A Frontrunner’s Guide to World Series Games Using Win Expectancy Tables.” My friend Man-su is has refused to do Game 4, and says we must stop with Game 3.
Since he works a lot during the week (and often on Saturdays) he doesn’t answer the phone on weekends, and so I had to wait until I saw him Monday to get his view on Game 3.
Me: So this game was on Saturday.
Man-su: Two days ago?
Me: Well, no. It’s Sunday in the U.S. right now. Sunday here is Saturday there. This game was played Saturday.
Man-su: (looks confused)
Me: Anyway, the other game just finished.
Man-su: What other game?
Me: Game 4.
Man-su: (looks more confused)
Me: So here’s Game 3.
Man-su: Good.
I ready the chart.
Me: Ok, you ready? Game 3. Who do you want to win?
Man-su: Colorado.
Me: But you’re supposed to be a frontrunner.
Man-su: A what?
Me: You’re supposed to want the winning team to win.
Man-su: Oh, right. Ok. Boston. Boston Red Sox. Go.
Me: Ok.
Man-su: Up and ok, and Rockies are winning. And back up now the Red Sox are winning. Down we go. Woah. Wait, I thought Rockies were down and Red Sox up.
Me: It’s home team up and visiting team down.
Man-su: Missing team?
Me: Visit. The team not from where the game is.
Man-su: I see. And down down. D. Ortiz. double. Wow. Down down. You are going down. Stay down. Go Red Sox. And woah…woah woah….M. Holiday home run up. Go Denver. Yes. And then back down and over.
Me: You hurried there at the end.
Man-su: Yes.
Me: You missed a big part of the game. You missed Jacoby Ellbury’s double.
Man-su: I should go back to work. We’re very busy these days.
Me: What about Game 4?
(Pause)
Man-su: I don’t think so. The Red Sox won and I’m happy. Very happy.
Me: Ok. Thanks.
Man-su: Bye bye.
Tune in next year for A Frontrunner’s Guide to the MLB Regular Season, Featuring the Team With the Best Record at That Time.
East Windup Chronicle Thanks Do Man-su for his contributions to these reports.
