Simon has an interesting snippet of a conversation between NPB legends Sadaharu Oh and Katsuya Nomura, conerning the Japanese team’s failure in the Olympics. Oh somewhat unfairly rips Toshiya Sugiuchi (who pitched very well vs. The Netherlands and was decent in the second Korea game) and they also digress into the ol’ “kids aren’t built the way they used to be,” but more interestingly they focus on Team Japan’s inability to take a walk.
I’m sure the team is being ripped every which way at home, but I’d throw in the atrocious fielding Takahiko Sato into the mix. He wound up with three errors in the tournament and his drop of a fairly routine fly in the second Korea game was a catalyst of the late rally.
Korea Beat also has a translation of an interview with Korea’s manager Kim Kyung-moon, which Nathan spells (I’m sure correctly) Kim Gyeong-mun. I prefer the written “K” to the “G” and I don’t shy away from “moon,” which I think looks better than “mun,” which looks like “mum” to me. Call it creative licence.
“I dreamed about being interviewed naked”
Manager Kim Gyeong-mun, hero of the gold medal in baseball, the final event at the Olympics, claims that he had a lucky dream prior to the Games.
“It’s actually embarrassing, but in this dream I was naked in front of a bunch of people, doing an interview. Some other people interpreted it as a good dream so then I started to think so too.”
“I got a call from President Lee Myung-bak but I couldn’t think at all of what to say, so I just said ‘I’m sorry’ and ‘thank you’.” Asked his thoughts on winning the gold he said, “I’m overwhelmed. I can’t believe it. I never thought I would win the gold.”
